History

“Tradition with Conviction”

Come on in and feel that special aura. It is exclusive to ancient walls which were built by hand out of stones washed in the mountain streams. Nothing here is straight. There are no right angles. And yet there is a timeless harmony. We can only guess at how many prayers have been said here, how many wishes sent to heaven, how many feasts celebrated under the vaulted ceilings.

The Kellerwirt appears in the records for the first time in 1275. It was here that an overseer "Kellerer" from the Upper Bavarian Monastery of Seeon on the Chiemsee Lake supervised the punctual payment of the tithes by the resident farmers. Even then guests found lodgings here for the night – already the beginnings of an inn.

Apart from some phases as judicial courthouse and post office, the Kellerwirt has remained a true Tyrolean inn. The Sandbichler family took the inn over in 1826. In fact Elsa Keller, the head of the family, is a direct descendant of Josef Sandbichler. Her children Claudia and Hans now run the Kellerwirt as the sixth generation – the seventh generation is already in situ.

In this inn steeped in history, you will receive the kind of up-to-date hospitality, which is to be expected of a Tyrolean inn and 4-star hotel. The Keller family members are the perfect hosts, who with enthusiasm and conviction protect the precious traditions and keep them alive.
